ADRA Ukraine renovated a damaged family house in Novoluhanske village, Eastern Ukraine

24 years old Vera lives with her husband and two daughters 5 years old Alina and newborn Eva in Novoluhanske village, which is located close to the line of contact in Donetsk Oblast, in the middle of the ongoing conflict.

“In 2014 we were forced to live in the basement for two long weeks without electricity and gas. It was the most terrifying period of our life. Alina* was 8 months’ baby at that moment. I can only imagine how frightened she was hearing the sounds of constant shelling” – shared Vera*.

Vera’s family lives in small, but beautiful house. It is hard to believe that this house, was destroyed by direct hit in December 2017.

“It was 18 of December, around 5 p.m. Thanks God we weren’t in the house. Alina* was participating in dance competition in Svetlodarsk (city located nearby). Even from there we heard that something goes wrong, it was too loud. I called my mom, and first thing she said me was: “Your house doesn’t have roof any more”. Everything was broken, windows were bowed out, sharp fragments were everywhere, walls were full of cracks…” – shared Vera*.

There was no chance for Vera’s family to renovate the house by their ones. Vera was pregnant by second child and didn’t have job. Her husband Lev was the only one who had work at that time.

In 2018 Vera became a part of “Repair and relief services for people affected by the crisis in Eastern Ukraine” project implemented by ADRA Ukraine, and funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany. The aim of project is to help needy people affected by armed conflict in Ukraine. Vera’s house was completely repaired by 2 months: new roof, walls, windows, doors, etc.

“I couldn’t believe to my eyes when I saw my house. I realized that we have place to come back, we have home where we will raise our children. I’m so grateful to everyone who support my family. Thinking about the future… If someone who responsible for what happening can hear me, I would say STOP THE CONFLICT! It continues 5 years in a row and its more than enough. I doubt that I or my children could ever forget it”- said Vera.
